One of Our Own Fund for Cristy
Supporting those with life-threatening diseases, big bills, and nowhere else to turn
The One of Our Own Fund was begun for Cristy Kessler by close friends who are inspired by her courageous battle against this constellation of diseases that threatens to take her life. No matter how bad things get for Cristy, no matter how many treatments suck the energy from her, no matter how depressing her diagnoses are, Cristy never gives up. To know Cristy is to laugh. Her sense of humor and her refusal to fold in the face of this life-threatening gamble makes her a hero to all who know her. The One of Our Own Fund began on behalf of Cristy and will continue to support others who face similar challenges long after our work has saved Cristy.
In order to provide the maximum funding for Cristy's medical expenses, everyone who serves on the Board of Directors or holds office in One of Our Own, donates their services. Operating expenses are largely donated and have very limited impact on the overall fund.

Although we are formally recognized as a non-profit by the state of Hawaii, we were unable to achieve 501(c)3 status with the IRS.
They did not like the idea of working on behalf of an individual, even though we would have continuously expanded the numbers of those we serve. They didn't get it.
